Electrification

Take the house off gas, in the right order

Heat pumps for heating, cooling and hot water, induction cooking, a bigger electrical panel and an EV charger. We plan them together, so the panel is ready before the big loads arrive. Licensed HVAC and electrical partners install the heat pumps, the panel and the charger.

The upgrades

Five upgrades, and what each job involves

Each one replaces a gas appliance or adds a new electric load. Here is what it is, why it makes sense in a Los Angeles house, and what the work looks like.

Heat pump heating and cooling

What it is

A heat pump is an air conditioner that also runs in reverse. In summer it moves heat out of the house, and in winter it pulls heat in from the outdoor air, so one outdoor unit replaces both the AC and the gas furnace.

Why it matters in LA

Most of the year here is mild, and mild weather is where heat pumps work best. In the Valley, where summer afternoons run hot, the same system handles the cooling you already pay for.

What the job involves

  • Installed by a licensed HVAC partner
  • Load calculation to size the system
  • Ducted system or ductless mini-splits
  • New circuit from the panel
  • Furnace removed, gas line capped
  • City permit and inspection
Duct sealing and insulation

Heat pump water heaters

What it is

A water tank with a small heat pump built into the top. It pulls warmth from the air around it to heat the water, using less electricity than a standard electric tank.

Why it matters in LA

Garages and utility closets here stay mild most of the year, which suits these units. It also takes one more gas appliance, and its flue, out of the house.

What the job involves

  • Installed by a licensed partner
  • Space check: the unit needs air around it
  • Dedicated circuit from the panel
  • Condensate drain line
  • Gas line capped, old flue removed
  • Permit and inspection

Induction cooktops

What it is

An induction cooktop heats the pan directly with a magnetic field. The heat drops as fast as gas when you turn it down, and there is no open flame. Pans need to be magnetic: if a fridge magnet sticks to the bottom, the pan works.

Why it matters in LA

Older LA kitchens were laid out around a gas range. When we remodel one, the cooktop, its circuit and the cabinets around it are planned together, and our own shop builds the cabinets.

What the job involves

  • 240-volt circuit, run as part of a kitchen remodel or by a licensed electrical partner
  • Panel capacity checked first
  • Gas line capped at the wall
  • Cabinets cut or built to fit
  • Permit and inspection

Electrical panel upgrades

What it is

The panel is where power from the utility splits into the circuits in your house. A service upgrade, often from 100 to 200 amps, raises how much power the house can draw at once.

Why it matters in LA

Many older LA houses still run on 100-amp service, which made sense when the stove, furnace and water heater all burned gas. Add a heat pump, induction and an EV charger, and that service can run out of room.

What the job involves

  • Done by a licensed electrical partner
  • Load calculation first (the old panel may be enough)
  • New panel, plus a new meter or service line if needed
  • SCE or LADWP scheduled to disconnect and reconnect
  • Permit and inspection before the power comes back on

EV chargers

What it is

A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, like an electric dryer. It charges several times faster than a standard wall outlet, so a day of driving goes back in overnight.

Why it matters in LA

Many SCE and LADWP rate plans charge more in the late afternoon and evening. Most chargers can be set to start after that window, while you sleep.

What the job involves

  • Installed by a licensed electrical partner
  • Placement where you park: garage, carport or driveway
  • Dedicated 240-volt circuit from the panel
  • Load check, since a charger can tip an older panel
  • Permit and inspection

The order we plan it in

Start with the panel, then the big loads

Every upgrade on this page draws on the same electrical service. Planning the order up front means the panel is opened once, and nothing waits on capacity the house doesn't have.

  1. Load calculation

Our electrical partner adds up what the house draws today and what the new equipment will add. That number decides whether the panel stays or goes.

  2. Panel and service

If the house needs more capacity, the panel comes first, with SCE or LADWP scheduled for the disconnect and reconnect.

  3. Heat pump for air

Usually the biggest new load, so it gets its circuit and its space in the panel first.

  4. Hot water and cooking

The heat pump water heater and the induction cooktop follow, each on its own circuit. The cooktop can go in with a kitchen remodel.

  5. Charger, then solar

The EV charger goes on last. Solar is then sized for the all-electric house you end up with.
