Where it starts

From the kitchen to the rooftop

We have built kitchens in Los Angeles for more than 30 years, and the kitchen is where a lot of homes start going electric. Take out the gas range, and the next steps follow in order.

This is the sequence we plan with homeowners, so each upgrade makes room for the next one. Licensed partners install the panel, the heat pumps, the solar and the charger.

  1. Kitchen

    Induction kitchen

An induction cooktop takes the gas line out of the room you use most. We build the cabinets around it in our own shop.

  2. Garage wall

    Electrical panel upgrade

Many older LA houses still run on 100-amp service. A 200-amp panel makes room for everything that comes next.

  3. Side yard

Heat pumps for air and water

One heat pump heats and cools the whole house. A heat pump water heater replaces the gas tank in the closet.

  4. Roof

    Solar panels and battery

Panels sized from a year of your bills, plus a battery for evenings and outages. The solar partner handles permits and the utility interconnection.

  5. Driveway

    EV charger

A Level 2 charger on its own circuit, fed from the new panel. The car charges at home overnight.

How the power moves through your house

A simple map of how the pieces work together. Every house is different, so the real sizes come from your own bills.

Energy flow in an all-electric home Sunlight reaches the roof panels. The panels charge a battery inside the house. The battery powers the home, and the home charges an electric car. A wire connects the house to the utility grid. 1 2 3 4 5 SUN SOLAR PANELS BATTERY HOME EV CHARGER GRID

  2. Roof to batteryPower you don't use right away charges the battery.
  3. Battery to homeAfter dark, the battery runs the lights, the fridge and the heat pump.
  4. Home to carYour EV charges overnight from the same system.
  5. Utility gridYou stay connected to SCE or LADWP. The grid covers what the panels and battery can't, and can take your extra daytime power.

Orange lines carry solar power. Green lines carry power into the house and the car. Grey is the utility connection.

Services

Upgrades for an all-electric home

Energy work first, built on three decades of remodeling. Pick one upgrade, or plan several together so the walls only open once.

With a licensed solar partner

Solar panels and battery storage

We check the roof first. Our licensed solar partner sizes the system from a year of your SCE or LADWP bills, installs it and handles the permits and the interconnection paperwork. A battery stores daytime power for the evening and can back up key circuits in an outage.

  • Roof and panel check
  • System sized from your bills
  • City permits and inspection
  • SCE or LADWP interconnection
Heat pump · Ducts

Heat pump heating and cooling

One system heats in winter and cools through Valley summers. A licensed HVAC partner installs it, and we seal the ducts so the air you pay for reaches the rooms.

Replaces the gas tank

Heat pump water heaters

Pulls heat from the air around it to warm your water, using less electricity than a standard electric tank. Installed by a licensed partner.

Attic · Walls · Crawlspace

Insulation and air sealing

Attic, wall and crawlspace insulation, plus sealed gaps around pipes, wiring and can lights. Less work for your AC.

Dual-pane · Low-E

Windows, sliding doors and skylights

Dual-pane, low-E glass that keeps afternoon heat outside and the view inside. We frame, flash and finish the openings.

Solar-ready

Cool roofs and re-roofing

Reflective roofing that stays cooler in the sun, laid out so panels can go on now or later.

WaterSense

Water-saving kitchens and baths

WaterSense faucets and showerheads, low-flow toilets and hot water recirculation, so you stop running the tap while it warms up.

200-amp · Level 2

Induction kitchens, panels and EV chargers

Induction cooking, a 200-amp panel upgrade and a Level 2 car charger, planned as one job so the walls only open once. A licensed electrical partner does the panel and charger work.

Title 24

Efficient ADUs, additions and custom homes

California's Title 24 energy code is one of the strictest in the country, and since 2020 most new California homes must include solar. Our custom homes and additions are built to it already.

Made in Los Angeles

Custom cabinetry from our own shop

Our cabinet shop on Clybourn Street builds the cabinets for our kitchens, baths and built-ins. When we redo a kitchen for induction, the cabinets come from people we know by name.

How a project works

Five steps from first visit to sign-off

The same office runs your job from the first phone call to the final inspection. You always know who to call.

  1. Home visit

We walk the house with you and look at the panel, attic, roof and windows. Have a year of SCE or LADWP bills handy if you can.

  2. Energy walkthrough and proposal

You get a written proposal: what to do first, what can wait, and a price for each. For bathroom remodels, you see a 3D rendering before work starts.

  3. Permits

We pull the permits for our own work. Our partners pull the solar, heat pump and electrical permits, and the solar partner files the utility interconnection application.

  4. Install

A foreman runs the site day to day, and our office keeps you posted on schedule and inspections.

  5. Inspection and sign-off

The inspector signs off, the utility gives permission to operate, and we show you how everything works.

Financing

Pay for the upgrade over time

Plenty of homeowners finance solar, batteries and heat pumps rather than paying all at once. Ask us at the home visit and we'll explain how third-party financing works for your project.

Rebates and incentives change often. We check what your utility offers before we quote.
